Seth is an internationally recognized artist who not only creates superb abstracts, but as an instructor clearly conveys the process of abstraction to his students. Abstract Thinking-Progressive Painting is an introduction to abstracts. The workshop will give you the groundwork for Abstract Thinking and start you on a compelling journey into the world of deconstructivism with Seth Benzel.
We will work with acrylics, but the principles can be applied to other media.
ABOUT SETH P. BENZEL
Seth Benzel, originally from New York, lives and works between NYC and Ocala, FL.
Benzel is an abstract painter who works predominantly with acrylic, while also infusing other mediums, and occasionally collage. A key element of Benzel’s work is the manipulation of line and space, and how they interrelate to each other. Linear aspects imply a sort of architecture…while freewheeling colors and brushstrokes represent the nature energy all around us. These elements could also be seen as a juxtaposition of the man-made artificial world vs. that of natural or spiritual world.
Benzel’s work is DECONSTRUCTIONIST in nature…celebrating the spontaneity of mark making, within a space showing movement and a certain perspective. Creating work that is always changing and never stagnant, where a painting never represents an ending but always a new beginning.
ARTIST STATEMENT
” My effort is to drive to the fullest extent, those few talents that were given me” -David Smith
My work originates from a language developed during a career of over 30 years of painting. The process is rooted in deconstructionism, allowing the underpainting to dominate, and space to reveal the context of the subject. Through this technique I am able to show multi-levels of experience…whether it be spiritual, emotional, or transcendent. From a technical standpoint this means a process that values mistakes and creates work that is fundamentally resolved but still open for interpretation. Aesthetically this means an experience that is transformative and never stagnant. The work keeps changing within the unchanging. This is where art becomes provocative, challenging, and timeless….when a painting never represents an ending, just another beginning.
