Ocala was once involved in the cigar industry. Join us as we learn about this often overlooked period of Ocala history April 4, 11 am, in Classroom C of the Headquarters-Ocala Public Library. At this free event, Dr. Lopez, Professor of Latin American studies at the University of Tampa will be presenting “The Cuban Emigre’ Communities of Florida and Jose Marti ant the Dawn of the American Century.” Lopez will re-create the cultural world of Florida in the late 19th and 20th centuries when the cigar industry immigrants of several cities, including Marti City, now known as Ocala, were actively involved in the struggle for civil rights and labor rights in Ocala.
