Our 2nd hike of the 2025 spring hiking season is Hike and Feast at Marshall Swamp on January 25th, 2025 at 9am.
Marshall Swamp is located off of the Ocklawaha River within the Cross Florida Greenway; a conservation land and wildlife corridor spanning from Jacksonville to Crystal River. The Marshall Swamp is 1 out of 7 of Florida’s “true biological swamps”, unlike other wetlands in Florida that fall under different classifications. After all, we do have many different kinds of wetlands. Yet, Marshall stands out among the rest for its unique arrangement of plants and animals, as well as the geographical characteristics that make it so. These kinds of wetlands are becoming a rarity in Florida, especially as developments of our natural lands continues.
Our hike will take place on the Florida Trail; one of our country’s great national scenic trails. While we anticipate the terrain to be mostly dry when we hike it, it is still a swamp, so make sure you’ve got a nice pair of water-proof or resistant boots for this one! This environment is home to various types of amphibians, reptiles, wading birds, predatory birds, fish, deer and so much more. We may even see wild monkeys! Once threatened by the prospect of a barge canal, the Marshall Swamp now thrives undisturbed. Hand in hand with the Ocklawaha River, this place stands as a shining example of what Florida is and has always been.
We can’t wait to return to this beautiful place with friends and strangers alike. We know that once you walk through the dimly lit canopy of trees and feel the teaming life around you, you too will be as captivated by it as we are! After our hike, we’ll be dining on an absolutely delicious “Low Country Feast” inspired by the traditional cuisine of the American Southeast. This meal will be prepared and served under the pavilion at the recreation area where we will begin and end the hike, courtesy of our culinary team Bon Voisin Chef!

Ocala Cultural Arts presents the second annual OTrak Chalk Walk as part of the Tuscawilla Art Park Series. Walk along the OTrak to watch live chalk art drawing by professional and student artists competing for Best in Show, Second Place, and People’s Choice. Winners of the competitions will be announced at 4:30 p.m. in the Art Park. Enjoy live music, local artisans and craftsmen, non-profits, and food trucks along with the chalk art!

Families and attendees will be able to create their own chalk drawing at the Art Park for $10 (cash only). Chalk is provided by Ocala Cultural Arts along with a designated sidewalk square inside the park.

This free event will host live musical performances by Fareeza, Niño Castaneda, David Smith Jr., The Mudds as well as student performances by Devotions Dance Company. The Tuscawilla Art Park Series is sponsored by Fun4Ocala Kids.

The theme for 2025 OTrak Chalk Walk competition is “Natural Wonders, Great and Small”, focusing on Florida flora and fauna. The professional competition is open to artists currently working and residing in the state of Florida. The student competition is open to middle and high school students from Marion County, Florida.
